Kyoto may be well-known for refined Japanese delicacies, but it also fares well in the simpler dishes department. As temperatures drop, cravings for hot soupy foods increase, which means it’s time for a good bowl of ramen! We highly recommend Kyoto Gogyo, which is located near Nishiko market. The taste is definitely one of its kind, which explains its recent rise in popularity!
Kyoto Gogyo is also conveniently located near Hankyu Karasuma station, just 5 minutes on foot. Many tourists seem to have caught on to the trend as well, as there are menus in English and Chinese available. You know they really serve up a good bowl as the store seems to be packed with diners regardless of the time of the day.
Both regular seating and counter tables are available, so you are welcome whether you come alone or with friends.
There is a little garden within the store, so that you can admire the pretty plants while slurping down your noodles.
This is Kyoto Gogyo’s signature bowl, Roasted Miso Ramen. The broth is made by over-cooking the ingredients in very hot oil to the point of burning them, resulting in the black coloration of the soup.
Even its tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen has a slight burnt but fragrant taste.
They serve more than just ramen though. The side dishes are also worth a go.
Yuba tofu sesame salad
(Seasonal menu) Charcoal-grilled salmon
A black and white sesame pudding dessert ends the meal with a refreshing sweet note. For fans of ramen, Kyoto Gogyo is a must try!
