Autumn Illumination in Kyoto 2016

As temperatures drop throughout Japan, tree leaves are also slowly turning red and are predicted to fall off completely by December. While momiji (red leaves) trees are everywhere in Japan, Kyoto is the most revered site for autumn leaves viewing. And it seems that it is not enough to just view them in the day; many places put up illumination lights around the autumn trees at night, adding on to the beauty that nature already offers. Below are a few places with gorgeous autumn illumination:

Kōdaiji temple

Located in Kyoto’s bustling Higashiyama district, Kōdaiji temple is one of Kyoto’s to-go places for momiji viewing. The illumination the temple offers is one-of-its-kind, and the designs change with the seasons, giving the place a different vibe every time.

Light up period: 21/10/2016 – 11/12/2016
Viewing time: sunset – 10pm (entry closes at 9:30pm)
Ticket prices: ¥600 (adults), ¥250 (children up to high school)

Kibune Shrine

This shrine is famous for its impressive rows of torii (shrine gates), the sight of which has become a visual representation of Kyoto. The pairing of torii with illumination and autumn leaves is simply a sight to behold.

Viewing time: sunset – 9pm (Eizan train route), sunset – 8:20pm (Kibune district)

Eikando

永观

Eikando – also known as Zenrin-ji temple – is where all the famous Zen masters of Japan gather at for training. The view of autumn leaves around Eikando is so breathtaking that the phrase aki wa momiji no Eikando (Eikando is where autumn is) was coined.

Kitano Tenmangu

北野

Although it is more famous for its beautiful sights during the plum blooming season, Kitano Tenmangu also offers a gorgeous view in autumn. Geishas walking along the autumn-leaves filled river path is a truly classic Kyoto sight.
